Talazen Spotlight: Veer Dedhia

This series shines a light on the amazing people who make Tala possible. Learn more about how they enable financial agency for our customers.

Meet Veer Dedhia, Engineering Manager at Tala! Veer manages the engineering teams who handle parts of the customer journey after they’ve taken a loan. This includes projects that bring value to customers beyond their loans, as well as tools to connect with customers about repaying their balance, such as offering waivers or creating payment plans.

How would you describe the culture at Tala?

Talazens are very solutions-driven, and it’s always a joy to bring a tough technical problem to the team and swarm on solutions. I’m also happy to have found and continued to foster a culture of learning in the engineering organization; we’re always looking to improve our systems and processes.

What’s unique about the technical challengings you are taking on?

The complexity of creating a global product that can be customized for a single market’s needs drives our technical designs to be flexible and configurable, which is a unique technical challenge at Tala. The same backend product may support two opposing use cases in different markets. One question that drives me is, “How would I configure this product for ten new markets tomorrow?”

What unique skills do you need to succeed on your team?

First, written and asynchronous communications. We work in global teams, and it’s very important to be able to provide context to engineers or product managers across different time zones.

Second, a passion for learning. I ask my team to rapidly learn new technologies and tools on a daily basis. Technical depth in one programming language helps, and I expect you to be able to apply that in a new language or framework quickly.

What tips do you have for someone applying?

Research the mission, and see if it aligns with your personal mission. Being a strong engineer will get you in the door, alignment with the mission will help you persevere when it gets tough, and being open to learning will help you succeed in the long term.
