Meet Andrea, Director of Credit Strategy Analytics at Tala! Andrea’s team manages the credit risk of our existing customers across our portfolios while defining and executing the broader credit policy to meet company goals.
What made you want to join Tala?
I joined Tala to work with a high-caliber team while making an impact for underestimated communities in emerging markets. As a Mexican woman, the mission is the reason why I love the work we do, and the challenges we face are what drive me, one day at a time.
What are you most proud of during your six years at Tala?
I developed the pricing policy for our line of credit product in the Philippines and Kenya that enabled customers to only pay for the days they actually use credit while keeping the company sustainable.
This is what is so unique about the challenges we’re working on — we need to create credit policy decisions that balance company profitability and customer health, according to their unique financial context. Our credit team is constantly innovating to ensure the success of both.
What unique skills and specialties do you need to succeed on your team?
Here you’ll need a stubborn sense of curiosity and an urge to verify everything so we can prove our hypothesis with data.
How did you get into your field?
I majored in both statistics (mathematical methods in the social sciences) and sociology at Northwestern and was always passionate about microfinance. So at Tala, I’m able to do everything I love: big data analysis and field research to provide credit to underserved populations and enable their financial agency.
