Meet Teresa Carlson, Engineering Manager at Tala! Teresa staffs and supports engineers for three scrum teams. As a hands-on engineer by trade, so she is closely involved in the technical aspects of each project, providing guidance and support to each team.

What impact are you making at Tala?

I care deeply about the engineering experience and have worked hard to ensure the engineers on my teams have an equal seat at the table throughout the product-engineering process. It is my core belief that only when product and engineering have an equal partnership can the best products be built, and so ensuring this partnership for my teams has been a large part of my personal impact so far.

What’s your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part of the job is getting to support the engineers on my teams as they grow in their careers. I am grateful that I get to interact with such brilliant individuals on a daily basis!

How did you get into engineering?

When I consulted my college advisor regarding being unhappy with my original major (psychology), she mentioned the business school was opening a brand new software engineering major, and I thought I’d give it a try. After my very first course, where I learned Python and Java, I was hooked and knew I had found my calling.

What tips do you have for someone trying to get into engineering at a mission-driven company?

Bring your full authentic self to the conversation. We are looking for more than just excellent programming skills; passion, curiosity, and the ability to work within ambiguity are all critical aspects of the engineering role when working on a team that is driven by mission.
