Talazen Spotlight: Jose Sarria

This series shines a light on the amazing people who make Tala possible. Learn more about how they enable financial agency for our customers.

Meet Jose Sarria, VP Global Controller at Tala! Jose is responsible for a variety of areas like full accounting function, taxes, treasury, financial audits, and internal controls, among others.

What impact are you making at Tala?

I am committed to building a truly global accounting team that can support Tala’s mission in the most efficient and effective way possible. We’ve built a central accounting team in Kenya, serving legal entities globally — and the effort is now paying off!

What’s your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part is working with my team who are in five different countries. Together we overcome the natural challenges that come from multiple time zones and remote work. It’s amazing to see how frequently my team works with other geographies and cultures: every day!

How did you get into accounting?

Almost by accident! I joined a recruiting event organized by a major accounting firm in Madrid to “sell” to prospective candidates and promote public accounting. I met my future first boss at that event, who convinced me to join the firm. He has since become the best career mentor I have ever had and a really close friend.

What tips do you have for someone trying to get into accounting at a mission-driven company?

Think outside the box and always say “YES” to new opportunities that come along the way. I landed in this role after many years of pivoting between public accounting, financial reporting, treasury, and FP&A. At some point along the way, I felt I was not a solid expert on anything, but suddenly I saw that having a rich and diverse experience was a strong asset.
